Series 7 Curriculum: Which Textbook Matters Less Than Which Practice Questions

When it comes to choosing which Series 7 curriculum to use, there are lots of choices. In today’s post we unpack which is most effective.

Series 7 Curriculum: It’s the Practice Questions

Years ago, there were only a small handful of curriculum providers for the Series 7 Exam. With the advent of digital publishers, and digital content, that number has increased significantly. Although not all textbooks are created equally, many understandably have overlapping content. Thus, most are not super differentiated.

However, where we at Professional Exam Tutoring find a big difference is in the practice questions. Specifically, Kaplan remains our top choice for Series 7 practice questions.

The reason for this is that they are the “Goldilocks” of practice questions. Their questions are neither overly difficult, nor overly simplistic. As a result, we believe your practice scores on Kaplan’s full practice exams will give you the best representation of your most likely score on the real exam.

So Where Should I be Scoring?

All of the above said, we highly recommend you leave a buffer in your scores. Specifically, try to make sure you can to go into the exam with a score averaging over 80% on practice exams from Kaplan. This will ensure a high confidence you’ll pass on the real exam.

Understandably, many people get excited about a score of 73% or higher. It’s difficult to get to that level, and once you’re there, you are theoretically ready to go. However, that is only if you get the exact same questions on the real exam. Realistically speaking, you should consider the fact that sometimes the exams may overly weight sections where you are weak or have difficulty.

If that’s the case, a 73% score on your practice exam could translate into a 65% on the real exam. To avoid disappointment, we recommend building in a nice buffer to make sure it’s very unlikely that you fail. Use Kaplan’s material and practice questions to overshoot.

Overall, other Series 7 resources tend to have excellent textbooks. But, their practice questions leave much to be desired. We highly recommend Kaplan for their textbook as well as their practice questions. You should also note that you can purchase their practice questions without having to buy a package. As of this writing, the cost for their practice questions is less than $70. For more information or if you’d like some help, feel free to reach out! Good luck!
