At this point, I have tutored countless students for the Series 7. With all those students there is a question that comes up time and again. What are the advantages and disadvantages of online vs. in-person Series 7 tutoring?
This comes up enough that I decided to write a blog post about it.
Online vs. In-Person Series 7 Tutoring: Advantages
- No Commute: For starters, the students that I have online enjoy the fact that the commute is non-existent. Studying for the Series 7 typically takes place at night time. In-person Series 7 tutoring sessions typically involve meeting in a neutral spot, such as a coffee shop. Many tutors prefer that to a students apartment so all parties involved feel safe. Anywhere outside the home requires a commute for both the tutor, and student. Setting up online appointments prevents wasted time from a commute, and ensures the student and the tutor feel safe.
- Save Time! The biggest and most obvious advantage of an online Series 7 tutor is the time saved. Without having to commute, extend your work day, or meet at an inconvenient time you can save hours of valuable study time – which add up!
- Fill a Void: I may not bring meaning to your life, but I may fill the void left by the lack of Series 7 tutors in your area. An online Series 7 tutor can help you ramp up on material you might not be able to understand. If there are no Series 7 tutors in your area, an online tutor can be a tremendous help!
- Same Study Material: Next, I would point at that the study material will be the exact same whether you get online or in-person Series 7 tutoring. Every student receives customized notes for each lesson. Combined with practice questions, the lesson will include the exact same curriculum.
- Lax Cancellation Policy: While I need 24 hours notice for an in-person session cancellation, that is not the case for online. Rescheduling Series 7 tutoring sessions for my online students is much easier.
Online vs. In-Person Series 7 Tutoring: Disadvantages
- No Face-to-Face Meeting: I’ll admit it. Some people just like the face-to-face meeting with a tutor. I totally understand, as most of us are on our screens all day. The online Series 7 tutor option is certainly more screen time, and that can be too much after an already long day.
- Tech Issues: Although technological improvements have made this less common (hooray Skype/FaceTime!), occasionally screens freeze up, connections drop, etc. You obviously don’t have this in an in-person Series 7 tutoring session.
- Distraction: Some people find studying on their computer distracting. Being in the comfort of your own home can ironically make you “too comfortable.” I’ve had some students find it can put them to sleep. I try to make it exciting, I promise! There is only so much I can do to make a balance sheet entertaining 🙂
All in all I hope this helps you see that online can have a lot more advantages than disadvantages. It’s not the same for everyone though. Feel free to pick whichever suits you the best and book a tutor!
